MOBILE, Alabama - Bill Jeansonne of Mobile got a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at the Country Club of Mobile on Tuesday. If that sounds familiar, it's because you could have read the same line in the Coastal Alabama Golf Notebook two weeks ago.
Jeansonne had a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at the Country Club of Mobile on Jan. 15. Two weeks later, he did it again.
"I couldn't hardly believe it, that it was happening again," Jeansonne said of Tuesday's hole-in-one. "It was just kind of amazing."
Jeansonne said his tee shot bounced over the ball of one of his playing partners before going into the cup on Tuesday. Howard Bronson, Emil Graf and Ted Burke were on hand for the happy event.
Jeansonne used an 8-iron on Tuesday because the hole was playing a little shorter than on his first ace, which he made with a 7-iron. The wind also was different - one shot was hit into the wind, the other with a right-to-left crosswind.
"It was kind of a glum day and I was using a yellow ball because it's easier to see," Jeansonne said of his ace from two weeks ago. "I knew it had a good trajectory, and it took one bounce and disappeared."
Before he doubled up, Jeansonne already owned a hole-in-one on No. 12, recording the first ace in 2008. In his 40 or so years of playing golf, Jeansonne said he'd had six aces.
MAJOR PLAYER: How about playing the U.S. Open or PGA Championship in Baldwin County? According to a recent list in South Florida Golf magazine, there's a course that's up to the task.
The magazine chose 10 courses that haven't hosted a major tournament but are challenging enough to do so, and it listed Kiva Dunes in Gulf Shores among them.
The magazine described its 10 as "a list of courses with the chops to stand up to the world's greatest players, design variety to keep the accomplished amateur engaged while being playable enough to appeal to recreational golfers and weekend warriors."
In addition to Kiva Dunes, the other courses on the list were the Champion Course at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Gardens, Fla., Pacific Dunes at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., Old American Golf Club in The Colony, Texas, Medalist in Hobe Sound, Fla., Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Wanamaker Course at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C., Spy Glass Hill in Pebble Beach, Calif., and Payne Stewart Golf Club in Branson, Mo.
SUPER BUBBA: You can bet on former Faulkner State golfer Bubba Watson when you're laying down money on the Super Bowl, if you're so inclined.
Among the proposition bets for Sunday's Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans is one involving Watson. Bettors pick which they think will be higher - Watson's final round score in the Waste Management Phoenix Open or San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick's total rushing yards.
Of course, Watson has to finish the tournament's final round for the bet to count. Last week, the 2012 Masters champ withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where he won in 2011, struggling with a similar stomach issue that he suffered during the season-opening tournament in Hawaii.
On Wednesday, though, Watson played in the Phoenix pro-am with Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps.
